< Back | Home : Pilot >> Districts & Clubs >> Michigan-Indiana District Greetings from Michigan-Indiana DistrictThe MI/IN District is in its 68th year as a district. The Pilot Club of Indianapolis was chartered in March, 1939 and is the oldest club in the district. Clubs are chartered as follows: Metro-Detroit, 1949; South Bend, 1949; Muncie, 1958; New Albany, 1960; Jeffersonville, 1964; Madison, 1973; Scott County 1978; and Greater Downriver, 1991. The nine clubs are extremely active and have made a difference in the quality of life in their communities. The commitment can surely be reflected in the longevity of the clubs. All the clubs have special projects in their communities and do creative fund raising for the many club projects. You will find pilots selling decanters of nuts; dipping their famous pumpkin ice cream; selling crafts, hosting luncheon/fashion shows, having Holiday Home Tours, to name a few activities. The District has fund raisers, too, and we just put together a cookbook called "Cookin' with Pilots". Anchor Clubs, young people of high school age, in Jeffersonville, Madison, and Muncie are doing extraordinary volunteer efforts in their community. There are around two-hundred (200) anchors in our District. An ongoing program in our district is Brain Minders, a Children's Education Program, Pre-School to First Grade, developed by Pilot International Foundation to create public awareness. The children's program is designed to teach a child how to prevent brain injuries and to protect their brain. Pilot or Anchor Club volunteers can present the program. This signature project was recognized nationally and is indeed a worthy program. The Governor's project for FY 2003-04 is the CHAD (Children Have An Identity) sticker program. The safety seat child identification program was developed as the result of a traffic crash involving a 13-month old boy named Chad. The babysitter who had been driving was killed. Chad was injured, but no one at the scene knew his identity. Only because an emergency room nurse recognized him could his parents be quickly located and his injuries be treated. The sticker is to be completed by the parents and placed on the right corner (child's right) under the cushion or center back of the child's safety seat. Hopefully, this will become an ongoing District project. Our District is committed to the Pilot International Foundation. The clubs each contribute $250.00 to support the foundations goal for scholarships and grants. District Conventions and Fall Councils are held annually. Guest speakers provide motivational talks, and our own Pilot's have workshops for members. There are social activities as well where Pilots can renew friendships and make new friends.
